Drama at the Etihad as Los Blancos Snatch Late Victory
Edin Dzeko's late goal looked to have given the visitors a crucial advantage, but Real Madrid produced an incredible late show to secure a dramatic 3-2 win in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie at the Etihad Stadium.
After a relatively quiet start, the match exploded into life midway through the first half when Joao Cancelo gave Manchester City an early lead with a stunning strike from outside the box. Real Madrid responded well and leveled the scores just before the break, with Rodrygo heading home a Dani Carvajal cross.
The second half continued in the same vein, with both sides creating plenty of chances. However, it was Manchester City who took the lead for a second time, with Ruben Dias scoring an unfortunate own goal on the hour mark.
With time running out, it looked as though City would hold on for a vital victory, but Real Madrid had other ideas. Substitute Marco Asensio equalized with a superb solo effort in the 86th minute, before Karim Benzema capitalized on a mistake by John Stones to net the winner deep into stoppage time.
The result leaves Real Madrid in a strong position heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week. Manchester City, meanwhile, will need to overturn a one-goal deficit in front of their own fans if they are to reach the final.
